LOS ANGELES — The NFC Forum released two specifications Tuesday that allow users to transfer data between devices equipped with near field communications technology.
The Generic Control Record Type Definition (RTD) and the Connection Handover candidate specification are available for free download at the NFC Forum Web site.
The Generic Control RTD specification requests the specific action such as starting an application or setting a mode on an NFC-enabled device from another NFC device, tag or card. The Connection Handover specification defines and establishes the connection in one step using a variety of wireless technologies such as WiFi or Bluetooth.
This capability lets two Bluetooth mobile phone users transfer large data files to each another by touching their phones together, for example. The specification enables developers to choose the carrier to exchange information. If wireless capabilities match as the phones negotiate a data transfer, the connection can switch to the selected carrier.
With the Connection Handover specification, other communication standards bodies such as the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) and WiFi Alliance can define information required for the connection to complete NFC Data Exchange Format (NDEF) messages. In fact, the Bluetooth SIG has already incorporated NFC as part of its Bluetooth 2.1 specification for two devices.
The NFC Forum now has more than 150 members. Sponsors include Hewlett-Packard, MasterCard Worldwide, Microsoft, NEC, Nokia, NTT DOCOMO, NXP Semiconductors, Panasonic, Renesas Technology, Samsung, Sony, and Visa International.
