Introduced a few months ago, the Savvi™ ceramic antenna product line from Ethertronics was just expanded to include some new high-performance embedded antennas. Targeted specifically at space-constrained portable devices, the new antennas support Bluetooth, WLAN, WiMAX, and PCS/WIMAX applications.
The Bluetooth antenna measures 5x3x1.3mm. Operating across 2.4-2.5 and 4.9-5.8 GHz frequency bands, the WLAN version measures 7x4x1.3mm. It is well suited for use in notebooks and RF modules. The WiMAX antenna operates on either the 2.3, 2.5 or 3.5 GHz frequency bands and measures 14x4x1.3mm. The new lineup also includes a diversity PCS/WiMAX combination antenna that measures 9.6x3x1.3mm and operates on the 1.93-1.99 and 2.5-2.7 GHz frequency bands.
One of the things that makes these antennas particularly interesting is the company's proprietary Isolated Magnetic Dipole™ (IMD) technology. "We came up with a unique antenna shape, where the coupling fields are confined to the antenna element, rather than the ground plane," explains Rick Segil, Ethertronics' vice president/GM Americas. "Our antennas still couple to the board weakly, giving designers more degrees of freedom." Segil is referring to the 1.5-mm keep out area around the device, allowing other devices to be placed in very close proximity to the antenna without changing its fundamental functionality.
