Until today, RFID visibility has been limited to choke points throughout an enterprise, such as portals at dock doors. The advent of small mobile RFID readers breaks through such barriers, enabling the installation of RFID readers in hitherto closed-off areas, including material handling equipment and delivery trucks. Mobile RFID readers also enable cable-free operation, which allows pervasive use of RFID throughout an enterprise. Inventory and asset visibility can thus be dramatically expanded.

This application brief takes a look at the criteria one should use for assessing this new product category, as well as the value of the mobile RFID readers in the warehouse, yard and retail environments.
