The term "Service Oriented Architecture" (SOA), though subject to a wide range of interpretations, is generally associated with an Internet-oriented evolution in computing architectures. The ubiquity of the Internet, and more specifically, of the World Wide Web and Web Services, has enabled new methods of engineering certain software applications. Rather than consolidating all of the logic of an application within a single, executable set of code, it is now possible to distribute the responsibilities of an application across many systems.
This white paper sets out to define "Service-Oriented Architecture" and outline its key principles, and to explain how Radio Frequency Identification (RFID)/Sensor technologies can benefit from these principles. The paper introduces GlobeRanger's iMotion Edge Process Manager (EPM)—a system that was designed and developed from an SOA perspective, but that functions like a single executable.
